BBSM 2021 SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT: GINNY MACDONALD

Paige Hull

Brit turned LA Interior Designer and Furniture Designer Ginny Macdonald is not a stranger to big ideas, fresh initiatives, and business risks, having launched her first upholstered furniture collection in collaboration with the online home furnishing and decor destination, Lulu & Georgia during 2020 (what a year to start!). Combining a wink to her British roots with California style, the look is a win and so was the launch. With a previously established design firm business in her own name, Ginny was a major addition to the Fall 2021 Business, Branding & Social Media Workshop and there’s so much we are excited to talk though. Risk and building partnerships seem elemental, but it doesn’t mean they’re easy. However, Ginny has navigated the system. And, let’s just take a moment to acknowledge that her hard work culminated with a launch during the early phases of a global pandemic!

FUN FACT: When Ginny came to the states, she worked for Emily Henderson for several years. First as an intern, then as her Design Director. Emily reached out in 2017 to hold their team retreat with us. So, it ended up that Emily, Ginny and the rest of their team were our very first guest’s when we opened our Boho cottage four years ago. I wrote about it here.

We can’t wait to connect with Ginny and dive into the stories that are lessons that you can take with you for your own businesses, in any stage. We’ll dive into the Lulu & Georgia partnership and how she built it and stayed true to her creative vision, how she navigated work transitions and project management during COVID, and how she had to adjust to really make it happen. Here is a sneek peak!

Transitions:
From Interior Designer to customer furniture, how did the concept germinate and how did it evolve into a pitch? What road bumps did Ginny hit, how did she get past them, and how did she stay true to her vision while keeping her other work going?

Growth:
Let’s talk about launching into the new in 2020. How did remote work evolve and what did Ginny and her team find successful or unsuccessful? In what ways did the timing catapult growth and allow them to be inventive and try new things?

Creative Mind & Business Mind:
How does Ginny approach business plans and effectively reflect creative vision, combining ideas with numbers and forecasts? And how about partnerships! What key advice and major takeaways goes into building business partnerships for creative people?

A Connected Brand:
In trying new things, how did Ginny maintain her brand and design aesthetic?

Likes to Love:
How was social incorporated into a new product launch, and how did Ginny get to be involved?
